07-12 Practice July 13th:
Just a reminder that the SLAP 16's have a scrimmage @ 8 am @ Ladue HS. The 18's have a scrimmage w/ the Jungle Cat U18 JO team at 7 am @ CSP. If you show up at 6 am wondering where everyone is, you probably aren't reading the web site or checking your "friend face" page.
07-08 Week 4 results:
SLAP 16's lost on 7/5 to a more experienced Storm squad. However, the 8-4 score was not reflective of how well the team played. There was communication all throughout the pool. Players were coming to defense early and plays were anticipated before receiving the ball. Good work!
Both SLAP 1 & SLAP 2 fell victim on 7/7. Both teams drew plenty of ejections, but couldn't transition well into the 6 on 5 offense. However, coaches are starting to see players applying what is learned in practice to the games. That is the goal.

SLAP has been traveling to this tournament since the club started. Traditionally the team has a kickball game each year in Des Moines. For the past 3 season, a SLAP alumni team made of current college players and grads has attended the tournament. This year they have challenged us to a kickball game and that game will take place on Saturday night.
07-01 A league results:
SLAP 2 U18 had a 4 goal lead, but couldn't hang on against Mad Dog. General game awareness (or lack there of) proved to be the downfall.
SLAP 1 U18 went up against the best team in the league and lost 14-1 to Daisy. Julie Grasse provided the lone goal. Chris Shirley did a nice job in the middle. Max Wahl hurt his bone during the game (whatever that means), but, along with Aaron Adcock, was very patient with his teammates as they worked hard to get ball side drives.
We are a very young U18 team with the majority of players just moving up from JV or even just entering high school. From the coaches point of view, it's about getting experience & learning from these games rather than winning. If it was all about winning, all the graduated seniors on the the team (JB, Michael, Stipo, Crockett & Pat Wall along with the high school open league players) would all be playing and we would have a true A & B team. So hang your heads high and keep improving.
06-29 B league results:
SLAP 16's fell 15-5 to Flyers. Counter attack defense a little slow. Good effort, but better communication is needed at both ends of the pool. Help defense looked good the 1st quarter.
06-28 616 Shootout Recap:
This past weekend, a SLAP team consisting of current player, coaches & alums headed up to Grand Haven, MI to compete against some tough competition in this 12 team senior men's tournament. Up first was the Kitchener-Waterloo team from Ontario, Canada. The team got off to a slow start due to very little warm-up, an early game, a time zone change and a course close to 30 meters. Over all the team played very well, despite losing Matt Zaggy to a 1st 1/2 misconduct call. However, Matt's 3 goals proved to be the difference as the team beat K-W by 3.
The surprise victory against K-W put the team in a what they considered a "must win" situation for their final group D game against The Marauders. A win and the team would secure a birth in either the finals at 11 am on Sunday or 3rd place game at 10 am on Sunday. A loss and they would be playing for 5th or 7th at either 2 pm or 3 pm on Sunday. Grand Haven is a GREAT town, but faced with an 7 hour + drive ahead of us, the team didn't want to be getting out of town late in the afternoon. So after spending the majority of the day playing in the 3 foot fresh water surf on the beach, the team headed back to the pool to take on the Marauders. SLAP got off to a quick start. The Marauders were a skilled group of ex-collegiate players, but just out of shape. They needed to take several subs on the fly and this helped give the SLAP team motivation to swim them hard. At one point the team had a 5 goal lead and Matt Zaggy was invited to attend his own funeral.
The victory over The Marauders was certainly a surprise to the other teams in the tournament as the host team (616) expected SLAP (and seeded them) to finish 3rd in group D. The next opponent was the eventual champion, NWO. Matt Stipanovich was battling an ear infection & sat this game out after getting a prescription. The team hung around for 3 quarters, but couldn't generate any offense. However, they really looked good with their zone defense & blocked several NWO shots. Finishing the game with an all-high school line up got the youngsters some experience against a very good and veteran team.
The 3rd place game against a stacked United team, started off with a good warm up. United got the first goal, but SLAP answered back. United ran drops from everywhere to help in the center on Stipanovich. United had a great goalie that is tough to beat on outside shots. But having 3 lefties playing in the water together in Stipo, T$ & Pat allowed for several ball-side drives from right to left. This generated great scoring chances & ejections. Our M-Zone was working great as the outside shooters from United were getting blocked & generating SLAP counter attacks and goals. Any shots that were getting past the defense seemed to find Baby Shrew, as he was on fire. The key to our defense was the fact that very few balls were getting to set. The turning point of the game was when Miguel drew his 3rd ejection of the game & got his defender rolled for misconduct. This lead to a 3 goal lead at 1/2. United was just too tired to do anything. In the 3rd quarter they tried and to break down our zone with wing to wing drives. However, in the 4th SLAP adjusted to this very well & stopped several United chances. At the other end, United couldn't defend the center as Stipo drew a 5-meter & Pat converted. Then Corey drew an ejection from the center and we converted. Patrick Shrewsbury drew an ejection on a drive, got the ball right back & scored. JB scored on a drive to center and SLAP had a 4 goal lead. 2 late United goals weren't enough as we hung on to win.
This was a great tournament and probably the best polo I have seen our team play. Our hope going in was to finish 9th after taking pretty much the same team up for the winter tournament in January and going winless. Great job by all. Up next, Des Moines in 2 weeks.
06-24 No Practice 6/25:

06-23 Week 2 A & B league results:
Mad Dog defeated SLAP U16. The team earned quite a bit of ejections, but couldn't convert.
SLAP 1 U18 defeated JCWP 1. Counter attack worked well.
Daisy defeated SLAP 2 U18. Great 1/2 court defense, but poor passing lead to quite a few counter attack goals.
